Fans who end up with a ticket for this season’s Super Bowl might want to carry along a big cup of soup. And don’t skimp on the cold-weather gear either. The Farmers’ Almanac is predicting that the game to be held at the Meadowlands just outside of New York City could get a little icy. The almanac describes the upcoming winter as “bitterly cold” and also says a winter storm will hit around the time the Super Bowl is played on February 2nd. Modern scientists don’t put much stock in the almanac’s secret formula for predicting weather. But the almanac says it’s correct about 80% of the time. Find out more at www.almanac.com.

Teens listening to music they prefer while driving make more errors than those listening to music specially chosen to promote safety, researchers in Israel say. Researchers evaluated young novice drivers accompanied by a researcher/driving instructor. Each driver took six challenging 40-minute trips – two with music from their own playlists; two with easy listening, soft rock or light jazz background music, designed to increase driver safety; and two trips without any music. When the teen drivers listened to their preferred music, 98% demonstrated an average of three deficient driving behaviors in at least one of the trips. Nearly a third of those required a sudden verbal warning or command for action and 20% needed an assisted steering or braking maneuver to prevent an imminent accident. Errors included speeding, tailgating, careless lane switching, passing vehicles and one-handed driving. Driving without music, 92% made errors. When driving with an alternative music background designed by the researchers, deficient driving behaviors decreased by 20%.

How much housework a U.S. man or woman does is influenced by their day job, and women do about two-thirds of household chores, researchers say. Elizabeth Aura McClintock, a sociologist at the University of Notre Dame, found when married or cohabiting men are employed in heavily female occupations – teaching, childcare work or nursing – they spend more time doing housework, compared to when they are employed in traditionally male jobs. In addition, their wives or partners spend less time doing housework, compared to when the men work in heavily-male occupations.

Police in Indiana said a 40-year-old man on a stolen moped led officers on a low-speed chase around the city of Fort Wayne. Lagrant Smith, 40, was stopped around 10:15 p.m. Friday for riding the wrong way on a one way street, but refused to turn off the moped’s engine and soon rode away, officers said. Smith led police on an hour-long chase that reached top speeds of 25 mph. “He was just driving around,” a police spokesman said. Smith got off the moped about an hour later and fled on foot, but was quickly subdued by a stun gun and arrested. The moped was found to be stolen and Smith allegedly side-swiped two cars during the chase, police said.
It was serious business when a pair of clowns got married. Patty Kulwicki and Bill Tedeski wore full clown get-ups when they tied the knot. Everything about the ceremony this past Friday screamed “clowns” – from the fake nose the groom wore to the flaming red wig the bride had on. Another clown officiated. And while the couple didn’t pile into a small car with the entire wedding party when the ceremony ended, they did pull their rings out of a Cracker Jack box.
A Tulsa, Oklahoma, man found hiding in the septic tank of a park outhouse has sentenced to one year in prison. Kenneth Webster Enlow, 52, pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor peeping Tom charge and was sentenced to the maximum one year in jail and a $5,000 fine. Enlow was caught hiding in the septic tank of a park outhouse and peeping at a 7-year-old girl and her mother. Firefighters pulled Enlow from the tank and cleaned him off with a fire hose. He told police his girlfriend hit him in the head with a tire iron and pushed him into the tank, but did not have any injuries consistent with the story.
If you’re one of those people who get irked by seeing people dress up their dogs in bows and sweaters, this story will definitely get your goat. A couple of dozen people put human outfits on their animals for a Grange Fair in central Pennsylvania Saturday night. One 10-year-old boy outfitted his goat “Buttercup” in a cheerleading uniform, while the boy and his brother donned football jerseys from the same school. Another man entered his cow in the dress-up contest for the second year. This time, the cow wore a tarp that said: “Eat Mor Chikin’“ – a takeoff on the ads for Chick-fil-A.
It took a about a week. But a huge steam locomotive dubbed “Big Boy” has made its way to a new home. The 1.2 million pound steamer left Fair Park in Dallas last week on the trip that would take it to a new home 30 miles north of the Texas city. The locomotive will be part of the Museum of the American Railroad in Frisco, Texas. The former Union Pacific Railroad engine was delayed by rail traffic. Still more than 100 people thought it was worth the wait and was on hand for its arrival Sunday.
A plastic surgeon in Los Angeles actually made the woman of his dreams. Dr. David Matlock, 49, first met Veronica, 38, in 2007 when she visited him seeking a “vaginoplasty” after giving birth. Matlock convinced her to also undergo a “Wonder Woman Makeover,” which included liposuction of the chin, arms and legs, and a Brazilian butt lift. Once Veronica recovered, Matlock asked her out on a date and immediately proposed to her. “She opted for everything I suggested. Even marriage,” he said. He’s been enhancing her figure ever since. Now they both compete in bodybuilding competitions.
A New Haven, Connecticut, man attempting to confront a raccoon accidentally shot himself in the leg while sneezing. James Pace Sr., 81, told police who responded to Yale-New Haven Hospital Saturday evening he was armed with a .22 caliber rifle as he waited for a wild raccoon who continually scratched at his back door. While waiting he sneezed, fell out of his chair and accidentally shot himself in the shin, Pace told police. Pace’s son drove him to the hospital. Police said his injuries are not life-threatening.
Women in New York, San Francisco and international cities including Cartagena, Colombia, bared their breasts for Go Topless Day. Dozens of topless women, joined by many shirtless men, exercised what they say is their legal right to go topless in the city Sunday as part of an international campaign to support the rights of women to bare their breasts in public. Topless women participating in the fourth annual event also marched in cities including San Francisco, Cartagena, Vancouver, British Colombia, and three cities each in Tennessee and Indiana. GoTopless.org listed the events held Sunday with a “Boob Map” on its website.
A man who stole an antique bible from a church in 1971 has sent it back to the facility with a note explaining his “guilty conscience.” Simon Scott, treasurer of Holy Trinity Church in Hastings, England, said the church received a letter recently from a German man who explained he had taken the 200-year-old book from the church while he was taking an English language course at the facility. He took the bible intending to read it and improve his English, but never got round to it. To the surprise of the church administration, a huge box containing a large leather-bound version of The Holy Bible, complete with brass clasps, later arrived in the mail, just as promised.
Bill Murray will help celebrate the 20th anniversary of “Late Show with David Letterman” in New York, CBS announced. Murray was the first guest to visit the program when it premiered August 30, 1993. He is set to appear on Thursday’s episode, marking his 26th appearance on the CBS show. Murray was also the inaugural guest on Letterman’s “Late Night” when it debuted in 1982 on NBC.
Contrary to a recent report suggesting that Lamar Odom had been missing for 72 hours, his agent Jeff Schwartz told ESPN yesterday that Lamar’s wife Khloe Kardashian knew his whereabouts. “Lamar is not missing. His wife knows exactly where he is,” Jeff said. “Playing in the NBA is still very much a part of Lamar’s plans,” Jeff added, without giving more details. Lamar’s father also denied that his son was missing. He told Celebuzz, “I spoke to my son last night. I know where he is at, he’s around … I told him I want him to resume his basketball career, and this … is not a good look. I love my son.” Lamar is reportedly battling an addiction to crack.
Former reality TV personality Kate Gosselin filed a lawsuit yesterday in Philadelphia, alleging her ex-husband Jon hacked into her computer. The lawsuit alleges Jon culled information from Kate’s phone accounts and her computer and gave it to Robert Hoffman for his 2012 tell-all book, “Kate Gosselin: How She Fooled the World.” Hoffman is Jon’s friend and business partner, as well as a tabloid reporter. His book was yanked from most sellers after Kate claimed the information contained in it was obtained illegally. Kate is now seeking compensatory and punitive damages, as well as court fees and actual damages.
Vin Diesel has received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The actor was honored with the 2,504th star in the category of Motion Pictures in a ceremony yesterday. Diesel’s “Fast and Furious” co-stars Michelle Rodriguez and Jordana Brewster were present at the ceremony. Katee Sackhoff, who plays in “Riddick” alongside the actor, also attended the ceremony.
Syfy has greenlit the pilot for “12 Monkeys,” a potential drama series based on 1995 Terry Gilliam film. The 60-minute pilot is being produced by Universal Cable Productions and Atlas Entertainment, producer of the Bruce Willis/Brad Pitt movie, which itself was based on the 1962 short, “La Jetée.” Like the film, “12 Monkeys” follows the journey of a time traveler from the post-apocalyptic future who appears in present day on a mission to locate and eradicate the source of a deadly plague that will eventually decimate the human race.
Lynda Carter is heading back to the small screen to join the cast of “Two And A Half Men.” The former “Wonder Woman” will play a version of herself in the upcoming 11th season of the sitcom. Carter won’t be the only new face on the show this season – Amber Tamblyn has joined the cast as the lesbian daughter of deceased character Charlie Harper, who was played by Charlie Sheen. Tamblyn will replace Angus T. Jones as a regular on the show.
A former Scientologist from Norway has come forward as the latest woman to claim to have “auditioned” to be Tom Cruise’s wife back in 2005. In a feature published by Australia’s Women’s Day magazine, Anette Iren Johansen recalls a bizarre audition process that was later reportedly revealed to have been for the actor. “They asked me so many questions about my life, my family background, everything I’d ever done in Scientology. There was a lot of talk about Tom Cruise at that time – he had just been in Norway [hosting] the Nobel Peace Prize concert,” she said. Johansen also said that a man from California followed-up with her via telephone, asking her if she had any “sexual perversions.” Johnasen is the second women to come forward with such allegations, following Nazanin Boniadi’s bombshell accusations in Vanity Fair last year. Marc Headley, a former senior Scientologist who was in charge of putting together a reel of women for Tom to review, confirmed her claim.
Everybody’s still talking about Miley Cyrus’ raunchy performance at the MTV Video Music Awards Sunday night and not in a good way. And those in Miley’s camp are not particularly happy. “Miley’s team is freaking about that performance,” said one source. But another claims Miley’s raunchiness was expected. Another person said to be upset by Miley is Robin Thicke, who feels he was upstaged by the 20-year-old. But one person who wasn’t mad at Miley was Thicke’s wife Paula Patton. While some sites claim she went ballistic after the performance, sources tell TMZ Paula wasn’t surprised by what went on because Miley and her husband had “tons of rehearsals” before the show and she knew what was coming.
The Parents Television Council is blasting Miley Cyrus and the VMAs for the raunchy telecast. “MTV has once again succeeded in marketing sexually charged messages to young children using former child stars and condom commercials – while falsely rating this program as appropriate for kids as young as 14. This is unacceptable,” PTC director of public policy Dan Isett said in a statement. “MTV continues to sexually exploit young women by promoting acts that incorporate ‘twerking’ in a nude-colored bikini. How is this image of former child star Miley Cyrus appropriate for 14-year-olds?” Ironically, Cyrus’ father, Billy Ray Cyrus, sits on the PTC’s advisory board.
Brooke Shields, who played the mother of Miley Cyrus’ character on “Hannah Montana,” says Miley seemed “desperate” on stage at the VMAs show in New York. Cyrus, 20, set tongues wagging when she appeared scantily clad while singing two songs – her hit “We Can’t Stop” and a duet with Robin Thicke on his single “Blurred Lines” – at the MTV Video Music Awards Sunday night. Cyrus was grinding against Thicke in a suggestive manner and making vulgar gestures with a foam finger throughout the performances. Shields talked about Cyrus’ sexually charged display as she served as guest co-host of the “Today” show yesterday morning. “I just sort of want to know who’s advising her, and why it’s necessary,” Shields said. Carter risked his own safety to take out the enemy and rescue a wounded fellow soldier who was pinned down by overwhelming fire. The battle left eight American soldiers dead, making it the deadliest day for U.S. forces in the war effort that year. Early in his remarks in the White House’s East Room yesterday, Obama turned to Carter’s young children and said, “If you want to know what a true American hero looks like, then you don’t have to look too far.”
